WE CAN SING

If you talk you can sing, if you walk you can dance.
— Zimbabwean Proverb
I hate people, but not right now
— Cybele, Vocal Workshop Attendee
It felt like a flock of birds, harmonizing at first light, just for the sheer joy of it. “I am here, you are here, we are together” His vocal coaching resonated, with both novices and trained, we all gained new confidence.
— Stephanie, Vocal Workshop Attendee
If we can find goodness, healing and a shift in our perception of ourselves and one another by way of our voice, we can more easily love ourselves, one another and the planet we have been given.

We Can Sing Vocal Workshop - Cumberland, B.C.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Our voice is the most powerful tool we possess from birth until death. The voice is our divining rod, a vehicle for self-actualization. Our voice is our inner compass, a catalyst for moving emotional states through our bodies. Our voice is our healing.

I have sung with tens of  thousands of people of all ages, most of whom have never felt comfortable singing. Like Joshua and the Israelites singing to bring down the walls of Jericho in the Old Testament, I have also felt the walls of perception and inhibition fall EVERY time I activate a group of people in collective song.

Most of us have been told at a young age that we shouldn’t or couldn’t sing, and spend our lifetime stifled, blocked and bound by the thought that we can’t sing.

The greatest tragedy of the human experience is the notion that we are cut off from utilizing the beautiful gift that is our authentic singing voice.

I am compelled to empower all people to open up, to move past the blocks and embrace the beauty and power of our voice. In groups ranging from thirty people to thousands of people, we have felt the visceral transformation that takes place when we collectively allow ourselves to experience the incredible unfurling of the harmonic genius that exists in every person.

Singing is medicinal. Signing heals trauma. Singing reveals who we truly are. Signing saves life.

As an artist, I am called to cultivate and facilitate the knowing that we ALL deserve to sing and be in love with our singing voice.

If we can find goodness, kindness and healing, and by way of that healing, shift the perception of ourselves and one another in song, we can then more easily love ourselves, one another and the planet we have been given.

TYPES OF EXPERIENCE

  • In performing art centers across the country, I present an immersive concert experience where I begin by presenting my pre-developed vocal performance, inspiring a sense of awe in the attendees.

Then in a series of acts or movements, I engage audience vocalization, physically leaving the stage at times, moving through the theater, inviting harmonic exploration by the attendees.

The final act of the experience showcases a completely a cappella “vocal sound sculpture” being created by all of us, unique and profoundly moving for each concert.

The experience would be recorded for the institution where the concert takes place as a sound art piece for posterity, which could be presented as a spatial sound installation experience.

The effect for an audience is profound and transformative. Attendees leave inspired, electrified with awe at not only what they experienced, but what they have contributed to that experience.

  • Utilizing sound equipment and drawing utensils, I move in a circle building vocal layers in loops while drawing simultaneously on the ground. As I move outward, the sonic work and visual work grow in depth and dimension.

Witnesses can sit with me in silence, or participate in the creation of the Song Drawing. The work is an exploration of the origins of linguistic mark-making. The work references ritual, prayer, meditation, invocation in a singular moving act that transcends specific traditions and pulls from an inner well of symbolism.

Using specific frequencies that have been clinically proven to address symptoms such as depression, anxiety and the like, the vocal sound sculpture is composed.

After completion, the physical drawing can be preserved as a ground mural or wall hanging, which witnesses can observe or walk as one might walk a labyrinth in silent contemplation.

The sound artifact is also made available by way of a link that anyone could access with a smart phone and listen with earbuds or headphones as they observe the visual work.

The Song Drawing can be performed and presented at performing art centers, universities, art fairs, museums and beyond.

  • A concert series where I go to schools around the country, working with children from pre-k through elementary, developing vocal songs to present as performances for parents and community.

I believe it is vital to instill a sense of inner confidence and familiarity with the singing voice in the hearts, minds and bodies of children in this crucial developmental stage of life. Recent studies have shown how powerful group singing is in the cultivation of personal and interpersonal relationships.

My approach is holistic and focuses more on the felt sense of melody, moving into allowing ourselves to FEEL the emotions that melody and harmony inspire.

The aim is to inspire a sense of “YES I CAN.”

We focus on the simple magic of allowing ourselves to vocalize, to listen, to find harmony with natural, innate instincts, apart from more formal institutional methods of music education.

Regardless of whether or not any child pursues music as a career choice, or simply a passion, these skill sets are designed to provide an architecture for being able to access the power of their voice authentically.

Furthermore, the baseline skill sets developed by way of group singing are transferable, equipping the child to navigate relationships with others, with employers, employees, partners, spouses and community.

In an age where so much of a child’s reality is tethered to the internet, to social media, and smartphone technology, this program provides an invaluable counter-balance for mental / emotional health and development.

    SCOPE & REACH

An example of the program I offer is as follows and can be practiced and presented by educators and fellow artists working with youth:

Part I - Vocal Exercises - A series of breathing techniques and vocal warm ups designed to activate the voice as an instrument sustainably.

Part II - The Vocal Star - We draw a five point star and each student names five unique things about their voice using adjectives as descriptors. The design here is aimed at creating an awareness of vocal uniqueness and capability and limitation that is positive and cultivates character.

We draw what we hear. On paper, we interpret what our voice sounds like as a visual drawn/painted art piece. This is then presented as a finished work of art.

Part III - Harmonic play - With our tool kit of developed symbols and vocal star points, we then sing together in a round of harmonies and tones. Together we discover melodies together. Together we write a musical, vocal performative work that then can be shared with one another and others.

This is a program that can be practiced daily in a classroom setting, once a week, or singularly depending on what fits into the curriculum. This can be an afterschool program offered as an elective, etc.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“I'm trying to find the words to describe my group workshop experience at the highway sanctuary with Morgan Sorne. I walked in with a "I can't/don't sing" mentality. Then left transported & floating on air as we collectively found our voices. It felt like a flock of birds, harmonizing at first light, just for the sheer joy of it. "I am here, you are here, we are together" His vocal coaching resonated, with both novices and trained, we all gained new confidence. Singing Along with him  should be experienced in person, if possible. I felt like I was in a sound bath with singing bowls....but it was just us, our voices...moving in ways that lightened our hearts. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommend.”

Stephanie - Hwy Sanctuary Workshop - 07/09/23

“I took a vocal workshop with Morgan Sorne yesterday evening and it was a very positive experience! I was especially struck by Morgan's sweet sincerity, humbleness, and very friendly accessibility - impressive in someone who could easily fly in the other direction as a "rock star" of some repute, and as someone leading energetic work [surely we have all been in circle with those who make a point to separate and glorify themselves in their method of leadership]. if he does this in PDX again, or in your town for outta-towners, I highly recommend it for those who are learning to step into your voice, and for those who enjoy singing with others and using the collective voice to transform and heal. we did some playful stuff with harmony that I enjoyed as well as holding space for each others unique soul expression. the only constructive critique that I would have is that at upwards of 40 people, it was a very crowded space for sure, and this also eclipsed potential for a lot more subtlety in vocal exploration [which was something I would have loved to have been able to *hear* and work with in this setting, given Morgan's special talent for a wide array of unique, dynamic vocalization styles]. I'd personally be happy to pay more for a smaller workshop size capped at closer to 20 people, though I respected the intent for accessibility. all in all a sweet experience; thank you Morgan for sharing your gifts and encouraging the self-expression of others.”

“Morgan’s vocal workshop was a great insight into how anyone can find their voice. In a group setting we were all able connect on a deeper level. Morgan was comforting, kind and left room for questions. The advice to imagine the texture of the sound and feel the voice within has stuck with me and I feel after just a couple hours of the workshop I have grown as a singer.”

— Melissa Monroe - Hwy Sanctuary Workshop - 07/09/23

Breaking, breaking open. For the thousandth time, gratefully. For the thousandth time, more gracefully. This weekend: dancing, crying, speaking, listening, protesting, dancing, standing, stepping, uncoiling, cutting, dancing. Ended the weekend singing. My first vocal workshop. Morgan Sorne, a most gentle and powerful creator of container. To dance Butoh for his performance two weeks ago and then to learn from him as a teacher, surrounded by courageous community...thank you, witnesses and holders of space. Mhm.
